Early Sunday morning, April 14th, 2024, around 1:10 a.m., officers responded to the area of St. Clair Avenue at 3rd Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived and found the victim, Jeremy Gunter, 48 years old, from Belleville, Illinois, severely injured from the traffic collision.
Officers and emergency medical personnel provided immediate medical treatment, and Gunter was transported to Belleville Memorial Hospital. Despite efforts to save Gunter’s life, he succumbed to his injuries. It is believed he had just left from the last Metro Train at its end point.
The Fairview Heights Police Department and the Metro East Traffic Crash Assistance Team (MECAT) have conducted a preliminary investigation, in which witness statements revealed Gunter was struck by a motor vehicle while attempting to cross the roadway. The police department, with the assistance of MECAT, will continue to complete the investigation of the incident. No one else was injured during the incident.
